A Good Year Book Spotlight with Tara Fox Hall…

Blurb:

There's no Heaven . like Hell.

Faced with losing Pandora Productions as well as her best friend Rebecca to the smarmy Paul, savvy film executive Debbie makes a pact with the demon Shaker, agreeing to bind herself to him as his human master in return for killing Paul and securing Pandora’s future. Yet even as Pandora gains accolades and renown, Debbie’s strong resolve begins to crumble under the weight of her actions. And the pleasure she finds in Shaker’s arms is becoming more than sex.

Is Debbie doomed to lose her heart as well as her soul to a demon who has only been waiting for the chance to claim both?

Excerpt:

Debbie awoke the next morning in her same clothes. Shaker was beside her, reading a book. With surprise, she recognized it as a recently published popular fiction novel.

Shaker caught her look, folded down the page, and put the book aside. “We demons can’t always be reading erotica,” he said with a laugh. “Not that I’d oppose a little morning delight, if you’re in the mood.”

Oddly, Debbie was very in the mood as she looked at Shaker’s muscular torso. But she pushed her desires down. “What do we have, Shaker?”

Shaker tilted his head quizzically. “You mean our relationship, I take it?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want it to be?”

“Damn it!” Debbie yelled angrily, losing her composure. “Don’t answer me with a question! Tell me what you want from me!”

“What you’re willing to give,” Shaker replied easily.

“No! That’s not good enough! I want to know what you really want out of our arrangement!”

The casual expression Shaker always wore cracked. For a moment, despair and anger showed through. “What do you want me to say?” he rumbled in a low voice. “You want me to be romantic and say I want your love, that I love you? You want me to tell me you’re free to fuck whomever you want and I’ll still come to your bed on the nights you’ll have me?”

Debbie did not back down. “I want the truth, you asshole!”

“Fine,” Shaker said bitterly. He stood and faced her. “The truth is that I don’t expect anything: not your kindness, not your love, not your sex, not your loyalty and not your monogamy.” His eyes were red and furious. “I have had many Mistresses in my life, and they’ve run the gamut from evil sadist to chaste temptress, Debbie. I don’t expect to be treated fairly anymore.”

Debbie snorted. “You expect me to feel sorry for you? You murder people and make clothes out of their skin! You eat them!”

“I am a demon, and that is what demons do!” Shaker shouted, his booming tone rattling the windows in their frames.

“Which means that you don’t feel badly about any of what you’ve done,” Debbie continued stridently. “You are not human, yet you expect me to treat you like one, to feel sorry for your plight!”

“I don’t feel badly about what I’ve done, or what I’ll do,” Shaker retorted. “I don’t expect you to treat me like your boyfriend, or even a friend.” His tone had changed from angry to resigned. “But I do have feelings, even if they aren’t the same depth as yours are.”

Debbie gaped at him, surprised.

“I’m not a romantic hero, nor am I a cardboard one-dimensional villain whose only impulse is to do evil,” Shaker explained. “Those are the two popular human perceptions, and both are wrong.”

“Then what are you?” Debbie said sarcastically. “My savior?”

“I’m a slave,” Shaker said sadly. “And this is all there is for me.” He turned and left. Debbie called for him after a moment, but he didn’t reply.

Book Spotlight for Web of Memory by Tara Fox Hall!

Blurb:

Sarelle’s return to her loved ones brings a brief measure of solace, even as she mourns all that changed in her absence. Rene’s presence and Sar’s pact with Shaker add as much tension as comfort, as the delicate balance of Sar’s life threatens to collapse under the weight of all she endured as Michael’s prisoner. Determined to reclaim her life, Sar fights back, inadvertently sparking Danial’s memory as an unseen ancient enemy prepares to strike a fatal blow.

Excerpt:

I dreamed I was walking in a field. Then I heard a bark, and turned. Ghost was there. Darkness, my Darkness, was with him!

I threw myself at her, hugging her as she licked my tears. But when I began to walk with her at my side, as we always had before, she nipped me, not enough to draw blood, but enough I yelped.

I looked down at her in shock. She wagged her tail at me, and gave me an uncertain look.

“It’s okay,” I said gently. “Come on, let’s go look for a mouse.” We’d gone only another few steps when I felt her nip me again. And this time, she growled a little.

I spanked her, and said “no” loudly. With a final growl, she turned and ran, disappearing into the woods in seconds.

I looked around, but Ghost was gone, too. What had happened? Feeling awful, I woke up at Hayden. As I wiped away a tear, something nuzzled my leg.

Darkness was lying at the bottom of the bed near my legs. She was looking up at me, her tail wagging a little.

Part of me wanted to hug her. But what if she bit me? What if this somehow wasn’t Darkness?

I grabbed my courage with both hands, and reached down and touched her. Her soft fur was thick and familiar under my fingers. She let out a gratified sigh.

“Is it you?” I whispered, tears threatening again. “Darkness?”

“Yyyyeeeesssss,” a dry voice rasped. I looked down with horror. The words had come from Darkness’s mouth, which was lolling open near my bare legs.

With a shriek, I began flailing and screaming. Suddenly Shaker was there, pushing me back as he grabbed hold of what had been Darkness. It was molting and melting into something with shiny black skin. Shaker dug his talons in and ripped it in two. With a supernatural shriek of grinding metal, grey-black smoke, and splintered bone, the thing vanished.

I was in the throes of hysterics, sobbing, flailing, and screaming. Shaker turned to me, and grabbed hold of me. “Calm down, Mistress.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down! What the fuck was that thing?”

“A Taker, a low level demon. They are attracted to loss, and can invade dreams, turning them sour. They feed on pain, especially emotional pain.”

“Why did it come to me? How did it get in here?”

“That is my fault,” Shaker rumbled. “You are bound to me, and your dreams are fair game because of that. Do you have a symbol of your faith?”

“I have a cross.”

“Wear it to bed. And it wouldn’t hurt to put a cross over your bed, or under it. That will keep any scavengers away.”

“I should’ve taken the drugs,” I whispered. “This is the first night I

haven’t.”

“Take one, and go back to sleep,” Shaker rumbled. “I can come to you at once, Mistress. Don’t fear to call for me if you need me. There is little I can’t either kill or send back to Hell.”

Contest and New Excerpt for Tempest of Vengeance by Tara Fox Hall!

Blurb:

A chain of tragic events cumulating in the shattering of the magical "dream bond" between Theo and Sar turns the lovers against one another, as Ulysses attacks from all fronts, hoping to destroy Devlin for good. The return of Lash reignites the fire between he and Sar, even as he saves her daughter Elle from certain death. Finally joined under Oath, Lash, Devlin, and Sar face the storm of Ulysses's wrath, knowing it will take their combined strength and courage to save all they love from his tempest of vengeance.

Excerpt:

“You need to come with me now,” Devlin said. “Teleport us to Davy’s.”

I knew why instantly. “No,” I said, trying to walk away and getting nowhere. “I don’t want to see him.”

“I don’t care what you want,” Devlin said forcefully. “You are taking us there, and making up with him.”

“Fuck you, I’m not!” I yelled.

Devlin shook me hard, making my teeth rattle. “Listen, you bitch!” he growled. “Ulysses challenged me for my territory an hour ago. I need to fight him in a week. And I need you and Lash focused, because you need to help me prepare.”

I was quiet now, listening to his words and trying to process them.

“Teleport us there now,” Devlin said stridently. “Then just tell him you love him—”

“He doesn’t love me!” I screamed.

Devlin ignored me, and kept talking. “—and that you want him back.”

“You’re just like him, you know?” I said viciously. “Always trying to make me give another chance to someone who doesn’t deserve one!”

Devlin stared at me, looking so hurt I trailed off into silence. “You came back to me because he asked you to?” he whispered. “Not because you wanted to?”

Excerpt:

I flipped the bacon and the sausage just in time, and told Lash to mix up the pancake batter. He gave me a blank look.

I cracked up laughing, and he laughed too, even though it was at his expense. I got the ingredients in a bowl, and handed it to him, and he mixed. Then we traded again, and I gave him some bacon and sausage to eat.

“Put in the bagels or toast, please,” I said, pouring the pancake batter into the hot frying pans. Lash did it, and then he was easing up behind me again, putting his arms around me.

“You make me so happy, Sar,” he said softly, moving my hair with one hand so he could kiss my neck. “I never thought—”

I heard a low growl, and looked up to see Theo and Terian in the doorway.

Theo’s eyes were yellow, and Terian’s were red, as they beheld Lash and me in our robes, him holding me as I made us breakfast. I could smell the scent of sex on myself, and I knew they could both smell it, too, and also probably that it had been only minutes before they arrived.

“I told you we should have driven here, not teleported right in,” Terian said, rolling his eyes. He didn’t look surprised, likely because I had just asked him for that potion.

Theo seemed unable to take his eyes off Lash and me. I went crimson under his steady gaze and looked down, but Lash just gave them both a wide grinning smile.

“Sorry, we didn’t know we had company,” Lash hissed gleefully, resting his head on my shoulder, holding me as he looked at them. “As you can see, we weren’t expecting any visitors.”

Book Spotlight: Deep Breaths, Tales of Hope and Inspiration by Tara Fox Hall

Blurb:

Tara Fox Hall’s writing career began in the pages of a small print magazine, Catnip Blossoms!, that a friend, Harald Moore, put out to promote his catnip farm in Johnsonville, New York. One short non-fiction article followed another, detailing her adventures saving wildlife, her experiences living on an acreage, and more than a few humorous recountings detailing the antics of her wacky pets. Written to delight, fascinate, and move readers, her simple but enchanting stories of country life quickly found a following. Tara kept publishing stories for the next five years, even as the name of the magazine changed to Meanwhile, and then to On The River, when the catnip farm went out of business, and Harald moved with his family to a new home near a river. These previously published stories are collected here for the first time with new added content, in the hopes of bringing a little more hope and inspiration into everyday life.

Excerpt:

SET ME FREE

My tiger cat, Kesteral, used to be an indoor cat when we lived in the busy city of Binghamton not that long ago. Since we moved to the country, my once shy and nervous cat has become an avid hunter. It was not very long until he began demanding to go out at night.

At first I tried to enforce a 10pm curfew, which I staunchly believed that all good little cats should be able to follow. After a few nights, “Kester” decided that 6am was too late in the morning to be out looking for “early” mice. 3am was much better. I tried yelling at the yowling monster outside my bedroom door, but as soon as I would begin to drift off to sleep, Kester would take up right where he left off. I next tried threats of punishment. He retaliated by clawing through the carpet at the basement stairs in an effort to get into the basement (a certified mouse haven).

I stuck to my guns, believing when there was no further carpet shredding that the problem was solved. I had cured him of his insanity! Then lo and behold, Kester greeted me one morning when I opened my front door. He had chewed through the plastic expandable partitions at the side of the air conditioner and slipped out! I taped up the ragged hole. Not to be thwarted, my sweet little monster chewed through the tape.

I thought Hey, who is smarter here?and blocked off the sides of the air conditioner with pillows held in place by a table. Kester proved he was smarter by squeezing his way through. In a master ploy, I removed the air conditioner all together (it was late August—fall was practically here. A few days of sweating profusely was worth teaching dear Kester who was master). Ha! I thought triumphantly. He’s not getting out now!

Excerpt

There was a rustling sound, then Lash came into view at the edge of the woods, snapping his coiled whip onto his belt as he walked in my direction through the tall grass. Relief flooded me, that I hadn’t stumbled on him either in snake form or naked, as he’d likely been a few minutes before. Lash was looking down as he walked, watching the ground for some reason, and didn’t see me.

I gathered my courage together, took a long breath, and then went to meet him. He heard me, his head snapping up after I’d gone a few steps. His face registered faint surprise, but didn’t call out a welcome. When we were face to face, we both stopped.

“What are you out here for?” he hissed, folding his arms over his chest, his eyes and tone cold. “Dev and Venus are inside.”

“Your help,” I ventured. “If you’ll give it to me, Lash—”

“No,” he said curtly, then walked around me.

I reached out and grabbed a hold of his arm. “Wait—”

He shook me off, and kept walking.

“Please,” I begged, hating the fact that I was pleading with him. “Please, Lash—”

“Sar, go home. Go to Danial. Go to Theo. Go anywhere, just leave,” he hissed, still walking away

I ran after him. “I need your help, Lash.”

“I won’t give it to you,” he hissed, still walking. “You can’t afford me.”

He was right about that. Being the best, he probably made 100K just to scare someone a little. I swallowed my pride, then my conscience. “I know that Lash. I’m not offering money; I’m offering you control over me. I’ll do anything you ask me to.”

Lash stopped, turning to look at me. Then he began walking back, eyeing me hungrily. “Anything?” he said, hissing. “Anything I ask you to do, you’ll do?”

I hated him for making me crawl. “Yes,” I said defiantly. “Anything.”

“What do you want me to help you with?” he said, folding his arms across his chest. “My price depends on what you are asking me to do for you.”

“Not me. I want you to help Theo. Robert asked him to come alone, that they would settle this one on one—”

“That’s as it should be,” Lash interrupted coldly. “I shouldn’t interfere with a challenge.”

“Don’t interfere,” I said. “But this wasn’t done fairly. Theo is still weak from the beating he took from Karl’s men. If Robert beats him, fine, just don't let him kill Theo. I don’t trust that Robert won’t just stab him in the back, or ambush him with more men, rather than fight him one on one—”

“Robert will kill him if he beats him, Sar,” Lash hissed. “That’s the way of challenges. I have always killed anyone who challenged me. You don't want them coming back for revenge later. So you’re really asking me to kill Robert.”

“I’m asking you to save Theo’s life. Will you do it?” I pleaded desperately.

“Did you go to Dev, and he refuse your request?” Lash hissed scathingly. “I can’t believe that, Sar. He still believes if something happens to Theo that you might die, too. He wouldn’t refuse you, though he would make you—”

“I came to you,” I said angrily. “Dev doesn’t know I’m here. No one does, except Serena. Theo can’t know about this—”

“You must be desperate to come to me like this,” Lash hissed, his cold eyes glittering. “To put yourself in my power, knowing what I might ask of you. To trust me that I’ll help you, if I say I will.”

“You never hurt me. So far as I know, you haven’t lied to me either. You kept our last times together a secret, just like I kept yours from everyone.” I paused, meeting his cold stare. “I trust you, Lash. If you say you’ll do this, I’ll take you at your word, and give mine in return.”

Lash looked at me, considering. “It should be doable,” he hissed finally, his tone thoughtful. “Where is the location of the fight? When?”

“Tomorrow night. I’m not sure where. He’s leaving around dusk—”

“I can follow Theo easily enough. I’ll be waiting near your barn on a motorcycle. If you tag him with a transmitter, I can track him if he loses me. Can you put one in his vehicle?”

“Yes,” I said without hesitation.

“I’ll put it in your truck, before you go,” Lash instructed. “Put it in his glove compartment within the truck manual case. He will not see it there, or think to check. Remove it after, and give it to me the next time you see me.”

“Agreed.” Now for the hard part. “What do you want in return?”

Lash came closer. “First kiss me, to seal our pact,” he hissed.

Shit, he was going to ask me to be weresnake so he could coil with me. I shifted uneasily.

“I’m waiting,” Lash hissed softly. “Unless you want to reconsider.”

You can do this, Sar. You have to do it. If Theo is saved, that’s all that matters.

I put my hands on Lash’s arms, and slowly leaned in towards him. Lash reached up and grabbed my hair, pulling my lips forcefully to his. But the kiss was chaste, lasting only a few seconds before Lash pulled back from me. “I want you to take Dev back,” he said softly.

Oh, God, no.
